PRESS RELEASE

Jockum Nordström: Begin, Began, Begun

22 November – 20 December 2013

Opening reception: Thursday, 21 November, 6 to 8 pm*

Anthony Meier Fine Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Swedish artist Jockum Nordström. His first solo show in San Francisco, Nordström presents a series of new collage drawings and sculptures.

Nordström’s drawings are a visual memory of his life, actual and in dreams.  Each drawing is an anachronistic narrative composed in a storyboard format; Nordström’s rustic, earth-toned palette allowing for an annunciated presence of his hand-cut figures, animals and landscape pasted onto empty or sparsely furnished backgrounds of watercolor saturated paper.  Figures engaged in benign yet very blatant behaviors.

Broadening his narrative, Nordström presents elegantly constructed sculptures of paper and cardboard. Pieced of simple geometric forms the sculptures are puzzled together and the viewer is invited to handle and move them.  Changing the juxtaposition of form and shape emphasizes that there are no boundaries to interpreting the artists’ work while also allowing the viewer to turn Nordström’s constructed memories into their own.  This range of possibility suggests that no single answer or narrative is necessarily the intended one.

Exhibiting internationally for over fifteen years, Nordström was recently highlighted in a mid-career survey at the muse d’art modern in Lile, France and the Camden Art Center in London, Great Britain.  Works by Nordström are included in numerous instituations included The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Gothenburg, Sweden; Helsingborgs Konstmuseum, Helsingborg, Sweden; Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; and The Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC.
