PRESS RELEASE

Anthony Meier is pleased to present Be Like the Sun, Never Done, Rob Reynolds’ (b. 1966, Boston, MA; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view October 1–December 18, 2026. Bringing together several large-scale canvases alongside a suite of watercolors from the artist’s ongoing New Suns series, the exhibition considers atmosphere as subject, using light, color, and perception to explore the relationship between abstraction and representation, and between the visible world and the forces that shape it. At its core, the exhibition is a deeply personal reflection, rooted in sight and place and shaped by a lifetime of looking, from childhood to the present.

Working across painting, watercolor, sculpture, sound, and digital media, Reynolds is guided by an enduring curiosity about how art can make the unseen visible and offer opportunities for heightened perception. His practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue with art-historical movements, treating formalism as a foundation from which the work arises, and beauty as an entry point into a more attentive way of seeing. Throughout the exhibition, atmosphere and light are treated as both a physical phenomenon and cultural proposition, inviting a collective reckoning with the changing natural world.

At the center of the exhibition is a new body of New Suns paintings and watercolors, whose title nods to Octavia Butler’s Parables books. Referencing both lived observation and imagined atmospheres, these works simultaneously reference the sun as representational image, abstract geometric form, and enduring universal symbol. Though organized around a seemingly simple motif, each composition registers subtle shifts in hue, luminosity, and atmospheric condition, inviting the viewer to a limit of visual perception. Seen together, they reveal the expansive possibilities contained within repetition, offering an intuitive and open-ended meditation on renewal. As Butler wrote: There’s nothing new, under the sun, but there are new suns.

A second body of paintings extends Reynolds’ ongoing engagement with botanical imagery, informed by walks the artist has taken through the forests surrounding Walden Pond near his childhood home, retracing the steps of Henry David Thoreau. Turning toward the enveloping conditions of shade, foliage, and filtered light, these works reference photographs the artist made there on Earth Day 2026, pointing to landscape as a living, entangled system in which we are all embedded, defined by continual transformation and regeneration.

Completing the exhibition is a series of imaginary sky paintings. Made by memory from specific sunrises the artist remembers from transformative passages of his life, without direct photographic reference, these diaristic works occupy the threshold between observation and invention, distilling the variable qualities of air, weather, and light into expansive fields of color. Drawing from legacies of postwar abstraction while rooted in the phenomenological experience of looking, Reynolds’ canvases oscillate between figuration and abstraction, inviting viewers to perceive color, surface, light, and emotional connection to our atmosphere as subjects in themselves.

Be Like the Sun, Never Done proposes beauty, careful observation, and openness as vital pathways activating understanding of our changing relationship to the natural world. Rather than prescribing meaning, Reynolds creates spaces for looking, where atmosphere becomes both medium and subject, allowing meaning to remain open, contingent, and continually renewed through the act of seeing.

ABOUT ROB REYNOLDS

Rob Reynolds (b. 1966) is a Los Angeles-based artist. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in Art and Semiotics in 1990 and is a graduate of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 1992, having previously studied at Cornell University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

Working primarily in painting, his interdisciplinary projects seek to activate a sense of the ecological, with an enduring curiosity about landscape and perception. Reynolds views the exchange of ideas implicit in teaching as central to his overall art practice, serving on the faculty in art production and critical theory at the University of Nevada, MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program for over a decade, teaching previously at Brown University, Harvard University, and lecturing at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California.

He has exhibited his artwork and public projects widely, including in Against Outer Space at UC Irvine (2025–26); the Sun Valley Museum of Art (2025); the Getty PST ART: Art and Science Collide, exhibition Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice at the Hammer Museum (2024–25); and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, among others.

His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Mohn Art Collective (MAC3) collection owned and managed by the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA); LACMA, The Brick, the RISD Museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and Brown University. Reynolds was previously an Artist Fellow at the Berggruen Institute and a recipient of grant support from the United States National Science Foundation.

Never Done Sun: on New Work by Rob Reynolds

If you look directly at the sun, you can only see its brightness. The sun is the source of illumination for all the visible world, but its own brilliance shields it from being seen. This is the riddle at the center of illumination: even though you might try to look past the sharp jags of light, the glare blocks its own source. If you stare at the sun for too long, you will go blind, eyes haunted by afterimages.

The earliest photograph of the sun was taken on April 2, 1845, by the French physicists Hippolyte Fizeau and Leon Foucault. It is a small daguerreotype of a round, white disk in the middle of a grey ground. This tiny sun portrait, only about three and a half inches wide, looks more like the moon than anything else. The photograph is underexposed—it has to be, in order to mollify the sun’s excess. Letting in any more light would threaten to destroy the image entirely, but it might get closer to what the sun actually looks like. It looks like something we can’t see.

If you do too much with a painting of the sun, it begins to look like the moon. Too many marks on paper or canvas, and the sun loses its dazzling glare, the thing that flares and strikes. These paintings of “never done” suns reckon with the sun’s invisibility and insistence; they shine too brightly and for too long. You have to squint your eyes against the glare of luminescence, seeking out the sun’s residue in fields of color washed by filtered light.

The paintings reveal what it is like to have looked at the sun and to have seen the impossible white blindness at its center. The striated sunrises are composed of imminent light meeting its remainder, the debris of something that was previously there. To be “never done” is not only to be ongoing or infinite, but also to be incomplete, unfinished, blocked, and brilliant, in a state of becoming and renewal.
