Teresita Fernández received a BFA from Florida International University, Miami, in 1990 and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, in 1992. She is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow (2005) and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2003), thecLouis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award (1999), an American Academy of Rome Fellowship (AFAAR) (1999), and an NEA Individual Artist’s Grant in Visual Arts (1994). In 2011, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. She is the first Latina to serve on this 100-year-old federal panel that advises the president and Congress on national matters of design and aesthetics.

While rendering luminous and poetic representations of heavenly bodies, Fernández's landscapes also unapologetically plunge deep into the buried, often omitted or erased colonial violence that continues to shape our present-day perceptions of the people and places around us. Characterized by interactive self-reflection and conceptual wayfinding, Fernández’s work engages in a quiet unraveling of place, visibility, and erasure that prompts an intimate experience for individual viewers.

Solo exhibitions of her work have been organized at the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ (2020); Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami Florida (2019); Harvard University, Cambridge, MA (2018); Olana State Historic Site, Hudson, NY (2017); Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA (2014); Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, OH (2011); University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL (2009); and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2005).
