RICHARD HOBLOCK
AMID THE NOISES OF COMING AND GOING
Anthony Meier Fine Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by San Francisco painter Richard Hoblock.
Hoblock’s second solo exhibition at the gallery features a body of work rich in layered abstraction, juxtaposing bold and pastel hues. Working with both a paintbrush and palette knife, Hoblock frames broad, curving strokes with thick, built-up oil paint. Deep excavations reveal rich tones behind the topcoat; the displaced paint remains on the surface
in a nod to history’s abstract expressionists.
“Concealment is an important part of Hoblock’s process, in which early layers of color and gesture are covered up, perhaps only glimpsed as residue on the edges, and retained solely in the memory of the artist. This destruction or, in a sense, recycling of the initial layers of his paintings as part of the working process relates strongly to the work of Lee Krasner."

"The exciting thing about sharing a painting with someone else is an articulation of a moment. There's a moment of joy when all of a sudden, after many attempts, it will flow. And it's as if your entire life, your entire experience, is at the end of your hand and moving with the gesture and moving with the color and moving you with what you know, of what's been done with this language called abstraction from the past. Is it changing? All the time. Will it change? Yes."
